Johnson v. Jacobson
Cert Denied — Oct 5, 2026No. 26-255
Does a licensed carrier have to get a separate permit from every state he travels through?
What happened
Jeffrey Johnson, an over-the-road truck driver who holds carry licenses from Georgia and Florida, sued Minnesota for refusing to recognize them. The Eighth Circuit upheld dismissal of his claim on May 26, 2026, reasoning that he could simply apply for a Minnesota nonresident permit. Minnesota waived its response; the Second Amendment Foundation, NRA, and other groups filed in his support. Denied October 5, 2026 with no noted dissent.
What it means going forward
Carry permit reciprocity remains state by state. This is the second time this year the Court has passed on the issue, after Gardner v. Maryland in April.
